English Language Workshop in the Workplace: Why It Mattered

The benefits of initiating English language workshops in a multinational company setting.

When I started to work as a technical writer, I quickly realized that the most difficult part of my job was getting the information I needed to create documents.

Having worked as an English teacher before my technical writing career, I decided to use my teaching skills to organize English-speaking workshops.

The idea was to encourage colleagues to practice English through casual conversations about work and our projects, so that we would all feel more confident using specific terminology and discussing projects with our project managers. We practiced English and exchanged information mainly related to our daily tasks, and I got a chance to gather more information for my documents, making it a win-win situation.

These workshops gave us a quality change from the routine work, and the effect was very positive. There was no fixed schedule; each session was independent, allowing anyone to join at any time. Our goal was to spend at least half an hour each week practicing English.
